The soils of this appellation in Nouvelle-Aquitaine are so renowned and essential to the quality of Bordeaux vineyards that they have given the region its name, illustrating the crucial role of terroir! The Graves appellation in Bordeaux: The large and beautiful Graves wine region begins in its northern part at the Jalle de Blanquefort, north of Bordeaux, and ends shortly after Langon, upstream from the Garonne River. It is a French Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) and part of a subdivision of the Bordeaux wine region. It is one of the oldest appellations in the Bordeaux region. The first vines were planted 2,000 years ago. The unique aspect of this appellation is that it is one of the few whose name derives from a type of soil: las gravas de Bordèu, literally the gravels of Bordeaux. \"De Gravas\" in Gascon Occitan means \"the gravel,\" a soil composed primarily of gravel with varying amounts of sand and clay. It is a rather poor soil covered with gravel, which, in the evening, releases the sun's heat, stored during the day, back to the vines. The Graves region comprises 4,650 hectares, of which 3,450 are planted with vines. The vineyards stretch across a wide, narrow strip of land bordered to the west and south by pine forests, which protect them from harsh weather. To the east, the Garonne River enhances the terroir by acting as a natural temperature regulator. The region's long history, distinctive character, and advantageous geographical location underscore the crucial role of the terroir in the quality of Graves wines. You can therefore find ruby-hued red wines, as well as highly aromatic or mellow white wines. In 1953, a classification system was established to distinguish the classified growths. This system was expanded in 1959, listing 16 classified growths in red and\/or white. The specific characteristics of the Graves terroir: The Graves appellation stretches over 60 km and boasts an idyllic geographical location, magnificent landscapes, a unique microclimate, and atypical soils. The appellation enjoys an ideal geographical position. It is sheltered from harsh weather by the Landes forest, and drought is less of an issue thanks to the nearby Garonne River. Regarding the soil, the vineyards are planted on terraces fragmented by erosion, with gentle slopes, or on vast gravelly plateaus. The soil is composed of pebbles, stones, gravel, or sand. Furthermore, the gently sloping land promotes soil drainage and channels water towards the Garonne River. In short, the appellation's geographical terrain is perfect for vines and the production of wonderful wines. To top it all off, the oceanic climate is also ideal. Winters are rather mild, while summers are hot, tempered by the nearby Garonne. The Graves appellation produces both white and red wines. Its grape varieties are the result of empirical selection practiced by generations of winemakers. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc are predominantly used for red wines. Each of these grape varieties has its own characteristics, giving the wines character, body, and power. Cabernet Sauvignon ensures the wine has excellent aging potential while developing remarkable aromas. Merlot, for its part, allows Graves wines to develop aromas of ripe fruit. They often have a fairly light tannic structure. Finally, Cabernet Franc allows the wines to have more sweetness and supple, refined tannins. As for the white wines, Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, and Muscadelle are the predominant grape varieties. These are interesting grapes that contribute sweetness and a wealth of aromas. The style of wines from the Graves appellation: To the eye, the red Bordeaux wines are a deep ruby color, indicating their aging potential. When young, they develop aromas of red fruit accompanied by spicy and toasty notes. Graves reds evolve harmoniously with an aging potential of 5 to 10 years. The white wines, on the other hand, have golden or emerald highlights. There is a wide variety, from dry wines to sweet whites, including the semi-sweet Graves Supérieures. The aromas are recognizable with a marked presence of violet and some surprising hints of coffee or smoke. The whites are reminiscent of broom and citrus fruits. Barrel aging for some of these wines develops the richness of their aromas over time. On the palate, the red surprises with its balance between structure and roundness, while the whites are very aromatic and floral. Here are a few gems from the Graves appellation; these are our favorites. These are wines from the Graves vineyards. Graves whites, Graves reds—these Bordeaux wines will make you dream. Graves, Château Pont de Brion, Bordeaux: The color is gold with green highlights. The bouquet opens with toasty and fruity notes, along with the freshness of citrus and pine.
