Château d'Arlay
A family estate since the High Middle Ages, we craft authentic terroir wines in the spirit of a Jura "grand cru," respecting tradition. Each hand-harvested grape is carefully sorted. All our wines age for several years in our cellars, offering excellent aging potential. Estate anecdotes: Château d'Arlay is a listed Historic Monument, a Remarkable Garden, and a Vineyard & Discovery site. It is one of the 40 members of the prestigious Académie du Vin de France. I know that for many city dwellers, the winemaker's craft fascinates them. Let's set aside the anxieties and hardships common to all agriculture, and rejoice with them in the fruit of this labor: wine. The estate's history: The grey Lias marl subsoil and a south-facing exposure, uncommon in the region, contribute to the elegance and minerality characteristic of our estate. Our vines, most of which were planted in 1953 and 1974, along with our sustainable, organic, and biodynamic viticulture practices, favoring indigenous yeasts, perfectly express the nobility of this château and its renowned terroir, considered the oldest wine estate in France. A must-see tourist, cultural, and oenological destination located in the heart of the Jura region, Château d'Arlay has the distinction of having been passed down through inheritance from its founding in the Middle Ages to the present day, and is considered the oldest wine estate in France. This land belonged successively to the Counts of Burgundy, then to the Chalon-Arlay family—the most powerful family in Franche-Comté—followed by the Princes of Orange, Counts of Nassau, Princes of Isenghien and Arenberg, Marquises of Vogüé, and Counts of Laguiche. The estate's wines are now exported to all five continents and enjoy international renown, such as its Vin Jaune, ranked among the 100 best wines in the world. The pride of the estate, Château d'Arlay, is a historic Jura estate, one of the 40 members of the prestigious Académie du Vin de France. As the oldest wine estate in France, it has always aimed to produce traditional, age-worthy wines where the terroir expresses itself with elegance. It produces exceptional biodynamic wines that we are proud to introduce to you.
