Château de La Chaize
Conversion to organic viticulture, then to biodynamic viticulture, use of machinery, vehicles, and equipment powered solely by electricity with the goal of "zero CO2 emissions," and a plot-by-plot approach. Anecdotes from the estate: In 1996, during the G7 summit held in Lyon, Château de La Chaize had the honor of hosting the spouses of the heads of state present at this international summit. As Hillary Clinton's security was crucial for the American security services, the pond in our Le Nôtre garden received an unexpected visit: it was searched by frogmen to check for any potential explosives! A brief history of the estate: Since its founding in 1676, this beautiful wine estate, built according to plans by Jules Hardouin-Mansart and André Le Nôtre, has remained a family home. It was passed on in 2017 to another family, that of Christophe Gruy. Determined to showcase this remarkable vineyard while respecting nature, he developed, with Boris Gruy – his nephew and the estate's Operations Manager – a bold ecological approach: conversion to organic viticulture, then to biodynamic farming, the use of machinery, vehicles, and equipment powered solely by electricity, a "zero CO2 emissions" objective thanks to electricity and heating for buildings powered by renewable energy, and a plot-by-plot approach that allows the wines of Château de La Chaize to fully express the character and uniqueness of their terroir. Spanning 350 hectares, 300 of which are contiguous, its vineyard has a production potential of 150 hectares. The pride of the estate: Since its founding in 1676, this beautiful wine estate, built according to plans by Jules Hardouin-Mansart and André Le Nôtre – whose main gate was sculpted with Bacchus, the god of wine – has remained a family home. The descendants of the founder, Jean-François de La Chaize d'Aix, cared for the estate for nearly three hundred and fifty years. In 2017, they passed it on to another family, that of Christophe Gruy. Determined to enhance this remarkable vineyard while respecting nature, he and Boris Gruy – his nephew and the estate's Operations Manager – are developing a bold ecological approach: conversion to organic viticulture, then to biodynamic viticulture, valorization of every by-product of winemaking in a "zero waste" approach, use of machinery, vehicles and equipment powered solely by electricity with the goal of "zero CO2 emissions", and a plot-by-plot approach.
