Domaine Chamfort
Anecdotes from the Estate: We work the soil in a rather traditional way, without using herbicides. In winter, we hill up the vines, followed by plowing to turn over the base of the vines in spring. The estate began its conversion to organic farming in 2018, achieving certification for the entire vineyard in 2021. As the plots are difficult to access and weeds are invasive, we work the vineyard entirely mechanically. To preserve the expression of the terroir in our wines, we limit ourselves to adding organic fertilizers, sulfur, and copper. The fermentation process is lengthy to ensure the sugar is gently extracted from the grapes. A Brief History of the Estate: In 2010, Vasco Perdigao acquired this estate after several years working in vineyards in the Northern Rhône. What convinced him to make wine south of this valley he holds so dear was not only the beauty of the landscapes but also the unique character of the Dentelles de Montmirail terroir. The pride of the estate: It is at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail that Vasco settled to produce his wine. Rich in diverse species and trees, such as oaks, boxwoods, olive trees, and Aleppo pines, these limestone rocks give the wine a unique character and finesse. The estate's four appellations are Vaqueyras, Rasteau, Séguret, and Sablet Côtes du Rhône Villages. Vaqueyras is produced on the garrigue plateau, a very ancient (several thousand years old) and stony soil. Thus, the vines draw water from deep underground, producing highly concentrated grapes in small yields. Rasteau, on the other hand, is the product of a soil composed of white pebbles and brown earth on the hills above the village. Sunny by day and cool by night, its exposure is ideal, providing the vines with consistent warmth that imparts a beautiful minerality to the wines. Séguret is produced on Mont Bayon (at an altitude of 450 meters) on soil made of limestone scree, red earth, and quartz. Finally, at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail, we find Sablet, grown on soil composed of sand and sandstone, resulting in wines of great freshness and finesse!
