Domaine d'Arton

Arton Estate

Sud-Ouest

Born in the Armagnac region, our red, white, and rosé wines surprise and redefine the standards of Côtes de Gascogne. Estate Anecdotes: We are the first winery in Gers to have adopted Genodics' experimental proteody technology, musical waves that promote the natural formation of proteins in the vine, enabling it to grow stronger. The Estate's History: Gascony boasts illustrious figures who left their mark on their time and posterity. Patrick de Montal and Victoire de Montesquiou, owners and winemakers of Domaine d'Arton, are among them. A woman of the world, a journalist for ORTF (the French national broadcasting organization), and a writer, Victoire is a legendary figure in Pompidou-era Paris, where she rubbed shoulders with those who shaped France, from Malraux to d'Ormesson. As for Patrick, he has embodied the Armagnac renaissance for 30 years. After some twenty years in Paris, they returned together to their native land, the Haut-Armagnac. Both Patrick and Victoire grew up in the Gers region, connected by this land to their illustrious ancestors. This return to their roots cemented their love and marked a new beginning, that of a "simplified life" focused on what truly matters: the vine, the wine, and Armagnac. Arton is a land steeped in history and wine, as evidenced by the century-old barrels discovered in the old wine cellar and the Roman coins found during the clearing of the "Two Cedars" plot. Indeed, the vine has long been the pride of the region. Becoming a winemaker at 40? A dream. A crazy idea. It would become a reality. A man of the land and a visionary winemaker, Patrick de Montal embodies a new frontier in the sleepy and monopolized world of Armagnac. In 1985, he created Fine Blanche®, a perfectly natural Armagnac brandy, thus launching a whole new category known today as the Blanche d'Armagnac AOC. Upon discovering the aromatic power of this "Armagnac in its prime," bottled without aging in oak, he was seized by a certainty: he had to plant his own vines to produce his wines and explore the aromatic potential of his Haut-Armagnac terroir, because the quality of the wine that goes into the still determines the quality of the brandy that comes out, and the vintage is decisive. The first vines were planted in 1991, reviving the winemaking tradition of Haut-Armagnac, which had disappeared with the phylloxera crisis at the end of the 19th century. By settling in Arton, he defied the prevailing opinion that deemed the land unsuitable for vines, a defiant gesture that ultimately proved him right. In 2017, his Armagnacs received the Award of Excellence at the Concours Général Agricole in Paris, a first for an Armagnac! Forty years after Patrick and Victoire, it is now the turn of their son Jean and his wife Lili to embody this new face of Armagnac. After professional careers that took them to the four corners of the world, they have settled in Arton to continue the family adventure. A native of the region, Jean de Montal has returned to the estate with an ecological project in mind: to deepen his father's environmental commitments by converting the entire vineyard to biodynamic farming and passing on a healthy land to his children. As for Lili Chieng de Montal, a Parisian of Chinese origin, she has long been a devotee of the Arton lifestyle and intends to introduce connoisseurs to the Arton aesthetic. With the same passion as Patrick and Victoire, Jean and Lili de Montal are, in turn, ahead of the curve in the world of Armagnac. The pride of the estate: At the summit of Haut-Armagnac, in the northern part of the region, on the Lectoure plateau, Domaine d'Arton enjoys a magnificent setting, bathed in sunshine and warmed by easterly winds. Naturally irrigated by pure springs, the rich and fertile clay-limestone soils give rise to the vines that contribute to the richness and complexity of the wines, which are luminous and mineral. It is on this land of Haut-Armagnac that the Montal family plants its vines to produce its wines and Armagnacs, making traceability "from vine to glass" the secret to its excellence. The 88-hectare estate, spread across 19 plots, boasts a rare grape variety selection, with eight grape varieties defining the unique character of the estate's wines: Ugni Blanc, Colombard, Gros Manseng, Petit Manseng, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Nothing is left to chance. Each grape variety is planted on the plot best suited to it and receives monitoring tailored to its specific needs.
