Anecdotes from the vineyard: I have always been passionate about vines, the living world, and terroirs. Currently, I am alone, with my 3 small hectares of vines in the village of Madiran itself. This allows me to express all my knowledge and expertise, and therefore remain true to my professional convictions. Listening to nature, understanding, or at least trying to understand, the living system. Putting myself in Mother Nature's place and trying to draw conclusions and explanations. Asking myself new questions every day, about future clones and rootstocks, potential exposures in light of climate change, the optimal leaf surface heights, and soil management according to the different phases of the moon. Being a winemaker is having the opportunity to make a terroir speak, the opportunity to respect a natural environment, the opportunity to listen to and hear the direction of the winds, to see the flocks of wood pigeons during their wintering, the opportunity to be a creator. I had the privilege of taking over my grandfather's vineyard, of understanding and learning from him the true meaning of winemaking. Producing little, producing healthy wine, striving to find the balance between humankind and the vine. The story of the estate: Stratéus wines are produced from two cuvées. One cuvée is Madiran for the reds and the other is Pacherenc for the white. The estate's story began five years ago when my grandfather offered to pass on his 80-year-old Madiran vineyard and some land on a hillside in the village. It was a real opportunity for me to promote this small family heritage. From there, a selection of clones and rootstocks followed to determine which grape varieties were best suited to tame these hillside terroirs of heavy clay and gravel, with their full southern exposure, which he had bequeathed to me. Today, I am able to produce 5,000 bottles of sweet white wine and 3,500 bottles of Madiran, allowing me to immortalize the vintage and take great pride in possessing the fruit of my grandfather's labor. The pride of the estate: Stratéus wines are wines that begin with the 2017 vintage. Located on the hillsides of the village of Madiran itself, the exposure is due south. White, red, and gray clay soils for the Pacherencs grapes, and a subsoil of grepp (a type of limestone), give this wine great aromatic power (Petit and Gros Manseng grapes). Red and yellow clay soils, and pebbles from the Adour River, are used for the Madiran red wines, where structure and volume mingle with red fruit notes (Tannat and Cabernet Franc grapes). The soils are acid-base with a pH between 5 and 6, allowing the living system to adapt perfectly to the cultivation methods I have implemented. The plot selection I have carried out is the result of several years of work, requiring me to impose my manual labor on the vines, beginning the selection in April with radical bud removal, and continuing throughout the vine's vegetative cycle. This was followed by manual leaf removal and two green harvests to continuously improve the health of the grapes and reduce yields and the need for fungal treatments. To date, we are intentionally producing 25 hl/ha of both red and white wines, with 70% of the grapes being hand-harvested using a basket, allowing me to combat oxidation. For me, the living environment, the terroir, patience, observation, and a willingness to question our methods are the keys to success in producing wines of character and great finesse.
