Domaine Rière Cadène

Domaine Rière Cadène

Roussillon | France

Located in Roussillon, between maritime influences and the Pyrenean foothills, Domaine Rière Cadène is a family estate whose viticultural history dates back to the early 20th century. The estate took its current form in 1994 when Laurence and Jean-François Rière took over the family's inherited vineyard and began extensive work on parcel quality and terroir interpretation.

The vineyard is spread across several complementary sectors of Roussillon, offering great geological diversity.

  • The white grapevines are located in Espira-de-l’Agly, on black schist and marl soils, which impart tension and depth to the wines.
  • The structured red wines originate from the limestone terraces of Calce, a terroir recognized for its capacity to produce dense yet balanced wines.
  • The more fruit-forward red wines come from the rolled pebbles of the Têt valley, around Perpignan, imparting suppleness and immediate fruit character.

Vineyard management is based on a long-standing commitment to organic practices, formalized by AB certification from 2016. Practices prioritize soil life and biodiversity: cover cropping, strict limitation of inputs, use of plant extracts, and respect for natural cycles. This attention to living organisms results in a rich and balanced agricultural environment, observed daily in the plots.

In the cellar, winemaking follows the same restrained approach. Interventions are limited to preserve the expression of the grapes and soils, and aging methods are chosen to reveal balances rather than shape them. Each cuvée aims to faithfully convey its origin, with profiles ranging from immediate fruitiness to deeper, more structured expressions.

In 2015, Guilhem Batlle, Laurence and Jean-François's nephew, joined the estate, bringing a fresh perspective while maintaining the continuity of the established work. Today, Domaine Rière Cadène offers a precise and coherent interpretation of the Roussillon terroirs, through wines that are both approachable, deeply rooted in their landscape, and adaptable to both casual enjoyment and more demanding gastronomic settings.
