Châteaux Montus et Bouscassé
A central figure in the Southwest, Alain Brumont profoundly transformed the image of Madiran within a few decades. As early as the 1980s, he took over Château Bouscassé and undertook extensive plot-by-plot work, expanding from a small core of vines to a total of over 120 hectares. The multiple and contrasting clay-limestone terroirs became the foundation for a nuanced and ambitious interpretation of Tannat.
Shortly after, he acquired Château Montus, which was then abandoned. The estate was rebuilt stone by stone with a clear vision: to create age-worthy wines capable of competing with the greatest French reds. Montus quickly became the most expansive and structured expression of his work, while Bouscassé maintained a more classic and terroir-driven interpretation of Madiran.
Always ahead of his time, Alain Brumont innovates on many fronts: late harvests, sweet cuvées, precise ripeness management, as well as exceptional mastery of aging and maturation. The creation of the «Tannat vault,» capable of housing several million bottles, illustrates this long-term vision where time is an integral part of the project.
Today, the estates are managed according to an HVE level 3 certified environmental approach, integrating biodiversity, agroforestry, and limiting impact on soils and water. The wines gain nuance with age: powerful without excess, deep, structured, yet increasingly expressive. More than just a style, Montus and Bouscassé embody a gastronomic vision of Madiran, conceived for the table and for aging.
