Red wines

Red wine is the perfect companion for hearty meals, from barbecues to elegant dinners, but it deserves a closer look to truly appreciate its complexity. There is a vast variety of red wines: light and fruity, full-bodied and tannic, aromatic, or barrel-aged. Each has its own style, personality, and terroir.

How is red wine made?

To make red wine, you need red grapes. Unlike white wine, it is the skins that provide the color and tannins. The key process is maceration—that is, the amount of time the juice remains in contact with the skins. The longer the maceration, the darker, more tannic, and more structured the wine will be.

  • Light-bodied reds: short maceration, soft tannins, perfect for drinking young.

  • Full-bodied reds: long maceration and sometimes barrel aging, resulting in complex, powerful wines with aging potential.

Grape Varieties and Their Influence

Each grape variety produces a different style:

  • Merlot: full-bodied, smooth, and fruity—often the first wine people try.

  • Cabernet Sauvignon: full-bodied and well-structured, with notes of blackcurrant, pepper, and sometimes cocoa.

  • Pinot Noir: elegant and refined, with aromas of cherry, raspberry, and forest floor.

  • Syrah: spicy and aromatic, sometimes peppery, often found in the Rhône region.

  • Gamay: light and fruity, perfect for young, easy-drinking wines, such as Beaujolais.

The role of the terroir

The terroir plays a fundamental role:

  • Burgundy: finesse, elegance, and delicate, complex red wines.

  • Bordeaux: structure, power, and aging potential, often blended.

  • Rhône and Languedoc: full-bodied, spicy, and sun-kissed wines.

  • Southwest: pronounced tannins and aromas of dark fruit.

Food and red wine pairings

Red wines are very versatile:

  • Red meat and game: opt for a full-bodied, tannic wine.

  • Grilled white meat: a light or fruity red wine is sufficient.

  • Aged cheeses: bold, robust, or well-aged varieties that stand up to strong flavors.

  • Perfect for casual dining: young, fruity reds that are easy to drink.

Educational Anecdotes

Did you know that Cabernet Sauvignon is now grown all over the world, but that it originated in the Bordeaux region? Or that Pinot Noir, which is difficult to grow and temperamental, nevertheless produces some of the world’s greatest red wines? Winemakers are always seeking a balance between fruit, acidity, and tannins to produce harmonious wines.

At Les Grappes, we select organic, biodynamic, or sustainable red wines from regions across France and around the world, inviting you to discover reds that are fruity, full-bodied, elegant, or aromatic. Every bottle tells a story, and every tasting is an experience in its own right.
